Support Comprehensive Immigration Reform Contact your House and Senate members SUPPORT Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

The 109th Congress ended in a stalemate on immigration. The 12 million undocumented immigrants in the US could face an easier path to citizenship in that new bills may not require them to go back to their home country to apply for re-entry. Employers around the nation who have come to depend on this labor pool, have breathed a sigh of relief. This softening on immigration has been attributed to the force of the Hispanic vote during the 2006 elections in November.

Although tougher boarder security may be part of a new measure, it may not include actual funding of the 700 mile fence along the US/Mexico boarder as approved in the 109th, but approved without a funding source. The new legislation, being drafted by Senators Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and John McCain (R-AZ); Representatives Jeff Flake ( R-AZ) and Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) may also develop a guest worker program for those who want to work in the United States without constant fear of deportation. This is the time to contact your two Senators and House of Representative member to ask that they support compassionate immigration legislation that does not separate families; allows education and health services for the stranger among us and provides access to safe working conditions for all workers.

Welcoming Conversations is a California-wide project that leverages a new film about one Christian family's transformation to spur faith-based dialogue and reflection about sexuality and inclusion in churches and communities across the state. Active Voice, a nonprofit media strategy team, is looking for 10 California congregations or organizations who are interested in holding a public screening of the film and follow-up dialogue in their church or community. With issues such as same sex marriage and anti-gay violence so common in the headlines, many Christians are thinking about issues of sexuality in the context of their faith - but few tools have been available to prompt productive, open discussions. For this reason, Active Voice has teamed up with the filmmakers of the PBS film The Education of Shelby Knox to create a new, repurposed version that documents how a small, conservative Christian town comes to grips with homosexuality in their schools and in the community at-large. We hope that this will be a useful tool for helping people of faith process their thoughts and feelings on some issues they may feel conflicted about, and shed new light on the meaning behind the greatest commandment.

We are inviting proposals from California churches and organizations that are interested in the opportunity to use this film to spark ongoing faith-based dialogue about sexuality and inclusion.  We seek specifically to engage congregations that are not already welcoming and affirming, but would like to begin conversations, or are in the midst of conversations, that might prompt more openness and inclusion towards lesbian and gay communities.  Selected groups will be required to host a meaningful group event that includes a film screening and discussion any time between April and June 2009. In return, Active Voice will provide a $500 stipend, a copy of the film, discussion materials, an event planning toolkit and strategic support throughout the planning process. Such support includes objectives clarification, media strategy tips, framing advice, and more. If interested, please send a brief one page proposal that includes a bit about your organization/congregation, your objectives, your expected date of the event, your target audience, and your plan for getting the word out.  Priority will be given to churches/organizations with a demonstrated interest in reaching mainstream church goers and/or a desire to foster better teen-parent relationships around these issues in particular.

Please submit your proposal to Lizzy Beach, Welcoming Conversations Coordinator, no later than Wednesday April 8, 2009. Also feel free to contact Lizzy with any questions or concerns: lizzy@activevoice.net.
